Confirmed: DAPP Malawi loses donor over abuse of funds

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has stopped supporting Malawi’s Development Aid from People to People (DAPP) following reports that the organisation was using the funds to support an organisation run by fraudsters.

Media reports also showed that DAPP Malawi bosses forced Malawian employees to be giving part of their salaries to the cult like organisation known as Teachers Group.

The revelations incensed UNICEF which granted DAPP $920,000 (K662.4 million) over the past three years.

DAPP-Chilangoma-UNICEF Malawi spokeswoman Angela Travis said they have stopped providing funds to the disgraced organisation in order to conduct their own probe.

“We want to make sure there are no benefits, there are no funds going to the organization,” said Travis.

She also revealed that between March and May this year UNICEF asked DAPP to produce payroll records but the charity failed to do so despite being warned that it will be investigated over the issue.

“Any organization would report payments to whom and when, and that would be in your payroll statement. Any organization should be able to produce that fairly quickly,” Travis said.

Another one of DAPP’s major donor, the British government – which has given DAPP $7.5 million (K5.4 billion) dollars since 2012 – also suspended all funding to the organisation in order to carry out investigations. Meanwhile, DAPP’s lawyers have denied any connections between its Malawi office and the Teachers Group leader Mogens Petersen saying he has never held any position in Malawi. The attorneys also played down accusations that it coerced its employees to donate to Petersen’s organisation and argued that the employees contributed the money privately.

  14. Malawi Shouldnt expect anything good from its leaders coz it is being ruled by corrupt leaders who never mind bout the poverty of the citizens. Laws are only working on poor people.
    The government is watching on those workers who are doing evils as if as it is watching games.

  39. Shame…!! From the infamous cashgate scandal…to the Defence force fraud scandal…and now its DAPP’s abuse of funds meant for the poor…all these with some current govt ministers involved… This is just too much for Malawians and i really do not know where we are heading to as a nation.
    Our tomorrow is so bleak and unpredictable… The only hope we have now is for a change in the leadership. No to money laundering…No to corruption…No to fraudsters in leadership positions.Only Our movement, “The Democrats,” is capable of bringing the change we need here in Malawi..
