Malawi government through the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) has disclosed that it will not slash fees in the public universities for fear of compromising quality of education in the country.
Students from public universities on Wednesday protested government’s decision to approve the University Council’s proposal to hike fees for generic students in the constituent colleges of the university.
Reacting on the petition presented to MOEST, government said Malawi students need to have high quality education hence the decision to adjust the fees.
But speaking to Malawi24, University of Malawi Students Union (UMSU) vice President Godfrey Pumbwa said they have been referred to the University Council for the issues in the petition.
“They say MoEST doesn’t determine fees, it’s only the University Council thus we need to deal with the university council.
“They also say they introduced loan board to carter for fees of needy students,” said Pumbwa.
Pumbwa added that the union is yet to map the way forward on the matter to have the issues addressed. “We haven’t decided yet. We may have a meeting shortly to deliberate on the same,” added Pumbwa.
The students suggest that no hike of fees should be made to generic students while the mature entry fees should only be increased by only 30 percent.

Almost everybody in this DPP led government attended free university education or had access to soft loans or bursery. Now here they are hiking fees and removing mature entry stufents on payroll yet education is the only key to graduate out of this mess we are in. sit down one day and start following a bit of history on how the once poorest countries who invested in education have now succeeded and competeting with the world’s super powers. i.e India, Iran, North Korea and many more. They are encouraging people to compete brain wise vis-avis,science. its high time we begin to put people in positions and posts on MERIT and NOT on hiden agendas and propaganda.
