Maize thieves jailed for six years

The Midima Senior Resident Magistrate Court on Monday sentenced two men to 6 years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing five bags of maize belonging to an 80 year-old man.

crime (2)The court heard that on 30th April this year, the two, 25 year-old Joseph Majoni and 19 year-old Mark Giliyoni, went to the house of Fillister Chirombo where they broke into the house and stole bags of maize.

When the matter was reported to police, investigation led to the arrest of the two men who were caught by Bvumbwe Police officers.

The two pleaded guilty on both counts of burglary and theft which are contrary to section 308 and 278 of the Penal Code respectively.

The Prosecutor Sub-inspector George Kachapila lamented the increase of such cases at Bvumbwe Trading Centre and surrounding areas. He asked the court to impose a stiff custodial sentence to the perpetrators for them to be reformed since both offenders are of tender age.

However, in his ruling Chitsakamile sentenced the two to 6 years imprisonment, saying such cases are rampant.

Both Majoni and Giliyoni hail from Sing’anga Village, Traditional Authority Bvumbwe in Thyolo District.

Now, if steallers r above the age of 80 then the judge z wrong to send them to jail bkoz they r not able to work than the 80yrs guy.
