The United Democratic Front (UDF) met with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on December 2, 2024, where they presented their concerns regarding the use of Election Management Devices (EMDs) in the upcoming 2025 General Elections.
According to UDF National Publicity Secretary Dyson Jangia, the party is seeking assurance that the use of EMDs will not compromise the integrity of the electoral process. The UDF is calling for transparency and accountability in the use of these devices to ensure that the elections are free, fair, and credible.
The MEC has acknowledged the UDF’s concerns and has agreed to consider the issues raised. “We are pleased that the MEC has shown a willingness to listen to our feedback and has agreed to consider some of the issues raised,” Jangua states. “This meeting marks an important step in ensuring that the electoral process is transparent, credible, and inclusive.
The UDF has expressed its commitment to continuing this dialogue with the MEC and other stakeholders to ensure that every Malawian voter is confident their voice will be heard and respected in 2025.
Opposition parties in Malawi are pushing for the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to cancel its contract with Smartmatic International Holding, citing concerns that the company’s technology could compromise the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
Smartmatic is set to provide Election Management Devices (EMDs) and election system management software for the 2024 general elections. The opposition parties claim that the use of Smartmatic’s technology poses a significant risk to the integrity of the elections.
