Malawi Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma has been arrested by Police.
Malawi Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya has confirmed.
A source says Chizuma is at Namitete Police and she will be interrogated this morning. According to the source, Chizuma is being accused of leaking information.
Her lawyer Martha Kaukonde has told the local media that police arrested Chizuma at around 4am today.
According to Kaukonde, she understands that the arrest is connected to the the leaked audio clip in which Chizuma spoke with another person about the fight against corruption in the country.
The arrest comes days after the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested Vice President Saulos Chilima on allegations that he received about K290 million from businessperson Zuneth Sattar who is accused of corruptly winning contracts and defrauding Malawi Government of billion in Kwacha through overpricing of goods.
In January this year, an audio was leaked on social media in which Chizuma discussed the Sattar case with a friend.
In the audio, Chizuma also made serious allegations against President Lazarus Chakwera who she claimed was not supporting her fight against corruption. Her allegations drew the angered the president who claimed to have considered firing her.
In April this year, a Mzuzu resident took the matter of the audi to court claiming that Chizuma leaked information to an unauthorized person during the phone conversation. However, the case was thrown out in September this year.
