Female law enforcers from Eastern Region Police Headquarters on November 11, 2022 conducted a reach out activity at Pemba Primary School in Jali where they offered to pay fees for two girls who are in form 1 and 2 at Mulunguzi Secondary School until the girls finish secondary education.

Speaking during the function, Commissioner of Police responsible for Eastern Region Violet Magwaya outlined that Malawi Police Women Network was established in the MPS with an aim of promoting women empowerment and ensuring gender mainstreaming and equality in the service. Corporate social responsibilities towards orphans, role modelling, girl child protection and women empowerment are some of the activities also conducted by the network.

Commissioner Magwaya added that it was in view of this that the committee came up with the decision to reach out to the two needy students, Lefida Tebulo who is in form one and form two student Ruth Mbuwa, who were both facing challenges to pay school fees and other necessities.

She encouraged the two to work extra hard in order to be future leaders as well to satisfy the women police officers who have put an extra gear by conducting various fundraising activities in order to get more support and achieve their goal.

In his remarks, the Head teacher for Pemba Primary School Mr Wyson Nakomo where the form 1 student was selected from was speechless and described the initiative as a miracle.

“You have done a recommendable job and planted a hardworking spirit to other learners. I never thought police officers could do such a commendable job,” Nakhomo concluded.

Speaking on the same function, member of Parliament for Likangala Ward Hon. Abigail Bongwe thanked Magwaya and team for adopting one student from her ward because it has reduced her work.

Bongwe added that, the initiative will strengthen the relationship between police and members of the community.

Expressing her gratitude, one of the adopted students Lefida Tebulo said that she is highly honoured as she had been struggling and had no one to pay for her school fees and other necessities.

Tebulo promised to work hard in class and also encouraged other students from her previous school to work harder as she believes that God makes a way where there is no way.

The grouping has already paid school fees for two terms in advance and also presented assorted school necessities including pocket money to the duo.

Taking advantage of the gathering, the grouping sensitised the community on gender-based violence, crime prevention measures as well as importance of sending girl child to school.

Some notable faces who graced the occasion were Member of Parliament for Likangala Ward Abigail Bongwe, Member of Parliament for Malosa Ward Grace Kwelepeta, Group Vllage Headman Godfrey, P.E.A for Mtonda Zone, Head teacher and staff for Pemba primary school, and other members of the community including Pemba primary school pupils.
