Police in Nsanje have advised the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to pull down its flags in the district because President Peter Mutharika is visiting the district today.
According to the police, the instruction to have MCP flags removed along the road to Nsanje will curb violence between MCP and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters.
Confirming the development, MCP candidate Lawrence Sitolo said the party received the instruction but they are not to honour it.
“Yes it’s true that we received the instruction requesting us to pull down our flags that we mounted within Nsanje Lalanje in line with the visit of President Peter Mutharika, we have not honoured the instruction because we are in a democracy,” said Sitolo.
He added that the flags are to remain flying just like the way DPP flags were flying when MCP president Lazarus Chakwera visited the area for campaign a week ago.
Mutharika is scheduled to visit Nsanje for a political campaign ahead of the by-elections to be held this month in some districts of Malawi.
Reports revealed that DPP supporters recently beat people in Nsanje for flying MCP flags in the district.
