Teachers in Nkhotakota district have hit at parents who distract them in the line of their duty.

The remarks were made at Chankhasi Private Primary School during the 2016/17 academic year final term closing ceremony.

Speaking during the ceremony, the headteacher of the school Mr Ntchita criticized some unruly parents who attack teachers when they are performing their duty.

“I want to tell you that we are professionals and whatever we do is in line with our teaching profession. You don’t need to tell us what to do and when because that is against our ethics.

“If your child has been punished you don’t need to turn against us but understand our role. We have various ways of making your children responsible citizens so give us chance to do that,” Ntchita said.

The headmaster gave another recent example where a parent attacked teachers at the school for allowing his children to take measles-rubella vaccine.

“The vaccine campaign happened countrywide and for a certain unruly parent to just come at the school and question us was unjustifiable. Please parents you have to be civilized and stop behaving childishly because such campaigns will benefit your own children not us,” he said.

“If you wanted to attack authorities in such campaign, you could have gone to district health office not us because we were just the last players in the whole process,” Ntchita said.

Malawi24 caught up with one parent who concurred with the headmaster by criticizing the malpractice saying teachers should be free to do their work.

“Indeed it’s bad to be telling the teachers how to perform their duty because we are not teachers. They undergo a teaching training where they learn various skills of how to build our children,” She told Malawi24.

“Sometimes it’s just ignorance that drives some parents to act like that. People should become modern and stop interfering in things that they don’t have knowledge of.”
