A pedestrian and a motorcyclist have died after a car crashed with a motorcycle at Zangala village along Lilongwe-Salima road in Dowa on Sunday.
Police have identified the pedestrian as Timothy Moses, 8, while the motorcyclist is yet to be identified.
Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Richard Kaponda said the car, a Kompressor saloon registration number RU 5557 which was being driven 44 year-old Chimwemwe Mtegha, was coming from the direction of Lilongwe going towards Salima with three passengers on board.
“Upon arrival at Zangala village the driver was negotiating a corner and he collided head on with the motorcyclist who was riding an unregistered Rifan motor cycle without wearing a helmet,” said Kaponda.
Following the impact the rider died on spot. The motorcycle went to the other lane and hit the boy who sustained severe internal injuries and lost blood and was admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital where he died on Monday.
The driver of the motor vehicle Kompressor saloon and two passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated as out-patients at Chezi health centre.
The dead body of the motorbike rider is at Dowa District Hospital mortuary waiting for postmortem and identification. The motorcyclist is believed to be in early twenties and at the time of the accident was putting on black trousers with a yellow shirt and black sports shoes.
Meanwhile police in Dowa district are appealing to members of the general public particularly people around Mvera Nalunga, and Chezi areas whose relative is missing to go to Dowa District Hospital or Dowa Police Station to identify the deceased.
The driver of the motor vehicle saloon comes from Magezana village, Traditional Authority Mthwalo in Mzimba district while the boy came from Zangala village Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa
