Malawi Police officers in Dowa are keeping in custody three men in connection to the murder of a businessman in the district.
The three are also suspected to have stolen K10 million from the businessman.
Dowa Police Public Relations Officer Richard Kaponda identified the three as Jamu Sautso, 53, as well as Yotamu Mkandawire and Feston Banda both aged 32.
According to Kaponda, the three murdered Ganizani Salela who had a shop at Njati Trading Centre and robbed him of money amounting K10 million and a cellphone.
“The suspects broke the house of the deceased by using a big stone and demanded money while hacking the deceased with a panga knife,” said Kaponda.
Selela died upon arrival at Makioni Health Centre in Salima district and postmortem conducted at Dowa district hospital revealed that he died due to head injuries and excessive loss of blood.
Police managed to recover a man-made riffle with two rounds of live ammunitions suspected to have been used to kill Selela. But police are yet to recover the stolen money.
The trio will appear in court to answer charges of robbery contrary to section 301 sub section 2 of penal code and murder contrary to section 209 of penal code.
Sautso hails from Kampini village, Traditional Authority Chitseko, Mkandawire hails from Makanya village Traditional Authority Kalumbu and Banda hails from Masula village, Traditional Authority Mazengela, all from Lilongwe district.
