Mob justice in Malawi: Suspected thief burnt to death in Dedza

A gang of irate people in Dedza district has burnt to death an 18 year-old man for stealing beans and clothes.

Police spokesperson in the district constable Cassin Manda confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Petrol Jalani of Kalinde village Traditional Authority Kachere in Dedza.

He said Jalani broke into the house of Mrs Enelesi Binali and stole two bags of beans and clothes before walking away.

But on his way to his destination he saw people who were hunting the mice and he started running away.

The group noticed that he was a thief and they ran after him. When they apprehended him, they set him ablaze using tyres and he died on the spot.

The police later visited the scene of the incident and took the corpse to mortuary where a post-mortem will be conducted.

Meanwhile Manda has condemned the killing saying such acts are against the constitution of Malawi.

He said: “Malawi police believe in fair trial whereby a person has a chance to defend himself in the court of law.”
