Kasambara’s lawyers involved in car crash

…as Mphwiyo case sentencing gets adjourned

Lawyers for convict Ralph Kasambara were on Monday involved in a car accident at Nathenje while traveling from Blantyre to Lilongwe.

The two lawyers, Bright Theu and Lusungu Gondwe, were involved in the crash as they were driving to Lilongwe to represent their client Kasambara.

According to reports, their car swerved off the road when the driver was trying to avoid a minibus which had suddenly stopped in front of them.

Theu is reported to have sustained disc injuries and he is unable to stand while his fellow lawyer Gondwe sustained chest injuries.

The two lawyers are yet to be scanned to assess the injuries they sustained during the accident.

In court, Gondwe and Theu were expected to make submissions of mitigations following the conviction of Kasambara on charges of conspiracy to murder Paul Mphwiyo.

But only Gondwe appeared in court where he asked Judge Michael Mtambo to adjourn the case since the lawyers had been involved in an accident and could not present the submissions.

Kasambara’s fellow convicts in the case, Macdonald Kumwembe and Pika Manondo, also asked for an adjournment saying they were not informed in time that they were expected to make the submissions.

Mtambo ordered Manondo and Kumwembe to make the submissions to the court and the state by Thursday and he adjourned the case to Tuesday, August 30.
