The Machinga first grade magistrate court has sentenced a 27 year-old man to six year in prison for breaking into two homes and getting away with cash and various items.

The convict identified as Medallist Anussa comes from Peketula village in the area of Traditional Authority Mlombwa of Machinga district.

CourtState prosecutor Rodrick Kamuona told the court that in the wee hours of 16 December 2015 the convict broke into the house of Daudi Phiri of the same village and used a knife to threaten the homeowner before walking away with cash amounting to K50,000.

The homeowner however recognised the criminal.

On another day, Annusa broke into the house of Kester Chipala of Saidi village and stole clothes, soap, blankets, and shoes, all items valued at 550,000 Kwacha.

He was later arrested and charged with burglary, theft, and robbery with violence.

Prosecutor Kamuona therefore asked for a stiffer punishment saying cases of burglary are on the rise in the country.

When passing judgement, Her Worship Esther Phiri concurred with the state and sentenced Madalitso Anussa to four years for burglary, 12 months for theft, and six years for robbery with violence but said the sentences will run concurrently.
