Daniel Kakhwesi will have to spend the next two years in jail after the Kasungu Magistrate Court found him guilty of stealing money from a woman after lying that he could secure a place at Malawi College of Health Sciences.
As reported by Malawi24 last month, the 27 year old had between November and December gotten K248,000 from the woman identified as Mariam Mataula.
Kakhwesi who hails from Kamkowa village, Traditional Authority Chulu in Kasungu district was charged with theft by trickery which is contrary to section 321 of the penal code.
Having appeared before the court in Kasungu, Kakhwesi pleaded guilty and told the court seating it was first time to commit an offence and therefore needed to get a lenient sentence.
But Prosecutor Sergeant Morton Munthali of Kasungu Police Station requested the court to give Kakhwesi a custodial sentence in order to give a lesson to some people who may have evil mind like of the convict.
Before passing sentence, Kasungu First Grade Magistrate, Damiano Banda accepted Munthali’s call, and slapped Kakhwesi with the said sentence.
