Terrible! Malawian man kills his wife and unborn baby

Police in Machinga district are keeping in custody a 19 year-old man for killing his pregnant wife and her eight month-old unborn child.

Machinga Police Public Relations officer Davie Sulumba has identified the suspect as Anderson Chiwala who killed his pregnant wife Ester Usuman.

“The suspect severely beat the deceased despite her condition and killed her together with the unborn baby,” Sulumba said.

Post-mortem conducted at Machinga District Hospital revealed that the woman died due to internal bleeding.

The suspect will soon appear in court to answer the charge of murder. He hails from Ng’andu village, Traditional Authority Ngokwe in Machinga. Meanwhile, the Police say cases of gender based violence are on the rise in the district.

According to Police statistics, from January to June in 2015 the district registered 126 cases while this year they have registered 192 cases over the same period which represents 52 percent increase.

Sulumba however attributed the increase to the fact that many villages now report cases to police.

“Another factor is hunger which affect many families in Machinga that made bread winners to run away from their responsibilities and marry new wives who have no children,” said Sulumba.

Police in the district have since encouraged the communities to report any gender based violence issue to police stations so that they can handle such cases professionally.
