A 74 year-old man has died after he was run over by a lorry on Wednesday in Ntchisi district.
The man, Kaliza Boma, was hit by the lorry when he fell in its path while walking staggeringly along Malambo-Kamsonga earth road in the district.
According to Public Relations Officer for Ntchisi Police station Gladson M’bumpha, the Nissan UD registration number NU 5959 lorry was being driven by Denis Ndilowe, 32, and it belongs to Nangaunozge building contractors.
M’bumpha said the lorry was coming from Malambo health centre heading towards Kamsonga with passengers on board and was passing by Lumbe village at an approximate speed of 30km/hour.
“When the driver was passing by Lumbe he saw two drunkard pedestrians walking the same direction whilst staggering,” said M’bumpha.
As the lorry was passing the staggering pedestrians, one of them fell behind the front tyres of the lorry. Then a rear tyre run over both legs of the victim and he sustained complicated fractures. He was taken to Malambo health centre where he died due to blood loss.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the driver of the lorry.
The deceased hailed from Chikuta village T/A Chilooko in Ntchisi district.
