The Midima court in Blantyre has sentenced two people to five years imprisonment with hard labour for breaking into a building and stealing cement.
Limbe Police Deputy Assistant Public Relations Officer Widson Nhlane identified the convicts as precious Mazinga and Labson Marko.
Nhlane said Marko and Mazinga broke into a storeroom belonging to Owais Construction Company in Maone and stole 66 bags of cement worth MK434,000.
The matter was reported to police and the law enforcers arrested the convicts.
“Some of the stolen cement bags were also recovered in the process,” he explained.
Nhlane further said the convicts pleaded guilty and in mitigation the two asked the court to be lenient when passing judgement because they are responsible people at their homes.
But the presiding magistrate Makhalira sentenced the two to serve a five-year jail term each saying they committed a serious offence and they deserved a stiffer punishment to deter the increase of such crimes.
Mazinga comes from Nankuyu village while Marko is from Jali village, both are from Traditional Authority Nkalo in Chiradzulu district.
