The Mangochi magistrate court on Saturday sentenced a Zambian man to 15 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing money by trickery from an Airtel Money agent.
According to Mangochi police spokesperson Amila Tepani Daudi, the Zambian, Derrick Thole, was arrested late last month after he stole money from the agent.
Daudi said on the day of the theft, Thole told the agent to transfer K320,000 to an Airtel Money account and the agent did as instructed.
But instead of giving the agent the K320,000, the Zambian pretended to be answering a phone call and started going back to his car.
He then got into the car and quickly drove away without paying for the transaction.
The agent reported the matter to Mangochi police and a few days later the man got nabbed in Balaka.
In court, the Mangochi second grade magistrate, Augustine Mizaya, found the Zambian national guilty and slapped him with 15 months imprisonment with hard labour for theft by cheating and said this should be a warning to would be offenders.
Thole hails from Chalinga village in the area of Traditional Authority Mzamani in Shadiza district.
