Misa-Malawi expects Kaliati to ensure free speech

Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter says it hopes new Information minister Patricia Kaliati will ensure that freedom of expression is respected in the country.

Misa-Malawi chairperson Thom Khanje said freedom of expression has been a challenge in the country in the past weeks.

“Freedom of expression has been a challenge in the country as people are being arrested for criticising government but we expect the newly appointed minister to see to it that freedom of expression is respected,” said Khanje.

He added that freedom of expression is fundamental in the principles of democracy.

Kaliati who was Minister of Gender, Disability, Children and Social Welfare was redeployed to the Ministry of Information after President Peter Mutharika reshuffled his cabinet on 7th April.

Khanje welcomed the minister and expressed hope that they will work well with her.

Kaliati’s appointment as government spokesperson was however not welcomed by some political analysts in the country.

Chancellor College based analyst Joseph Chunga intimated that Kaliati has been given the post because she makes noise and expressed doubt that the new information minister will perform better than her predecessor Jappie Mhango.

“This idea that a government spokesperson in the ministry of information should be somebody who is able to make the best of the noises has not helped this country. I do not know what the President’s judgment is, but I think Kaliati will do the same job that Mhango was doing,” he told the local media.
