Police in Karonga have arrested a traditional leader for stealing money meant for Malawi Social Action Fund (MASAF 4) Public Works Programme beneficiaries.
The chief, Group Village Headman (GVH) Mwenewisi of Traditional Authority Kilupula, added names of the deceased and his children to the list of beneficiaries for the public works programmes.
Residents discovered that 80 names on the list of beneficiaries the chief used are ghost workers and the chief pocketed their wages.
They later arrested the traditional leader and handed him over to Kaporo Police Station in Karonga.
Deputy spokesperson for Karonga Police Constable George Mlewa confirmed the arrest.
“I can confirm that we have arrested GVH Mwenewisi for stealing money by using names of the deceased and his children on the list of beneficiaries, and investigations are still underway in order to trace all the suspicious beneficiaries,” said Mlewa.
The first phase of the public works programme in Karonga ends this month (March).
In the initial allocation program, Karonga could get K 206, 132, 611 and 16087 will benefit.
