University student arrested for insulting President Mutharika

A student at DeYang University in Lilongwe identified as Patrick Simupanda is in custody after he got reported to police for insulting Malawi President Peter Mutharika, Malawi24 has learnt.

According to lawyer of the student Gilbert Khonyongwa, Banda was reported to police by lady donning  Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) colors.

It is said that Banda was in one of the minibuses in the city and an unidentified man questioned the guts of the lady to wear DPP clothes despite the fact party has failed.

All the people in the minibus had joined the debate with others backing the Malawi leader but Banda  with others had a different view.

But the man who had ignited the whole issue came off the bus at one of the stages.

At another stage, the lady came off and alerted police who were close to Crossroads hotel that the boy had been using foul language on Mutharika.

It was after this that the law enforcers picked him before interrogating him and taking him to Area 3 police.

His lawyer has since said that he will appear in court on Monday and is likely to answer charges likely to cause breach of peace.

Last month, police arrested a man who was seen with a pile of stones at Lunzu, Blantyre stoning an image of Mutharika at a billboard close to the road.
