Police in Machinga district on Friday recovered a rifle which was recently stolen from a fence attendant at Liwonde National Park.
According to Machinga police relations officer Davie Sulumba, the law enforcers have arrested 27-year old Davie Bonongwe after he was found with the Mark 4 rifle and three live bullets.
Sulumba added that police have also nabbed the fence attendant, Beston Chabwera, 22, for being suspected to have hired Bonongwe to steal the rifle and the live ammunitions, which is contrary to section 95 of the penal code.
The publicist said the gun was reported stolen some time back at Chabwera’s house at Isa camp in the area of Traditional Authority Liwonde in Machinga district.
In a related development, Machinga Police have nabbed Davies Chapola, 32, and Bizwick Kauzane, 35, for being found with five kilogrammes of ivory which they wanted to sell at K40,000.
The two suspects hail from Chaima village in the area of Traditional Authority Ngokwe and their cases are expected to be presented in the court of law soon.
