An angry mob in Neno on Monday killed four elderly people whom the residents suspected to have been involved in witchcraft.
According to police in the district, the mob accused the four of using a manmade lightning to bewitch and kill their relative, 17 year-old Flora Kanjete.
Neno Police spokesperson Raphael Kaliati identified the elderly people murdered as Eliza Ennosi Kanjete (86), Elenefa Kanjete (76), Byson Kanjete (73), and Idesi Julius Kanjete (69). They all hailed from Chimbalanga village, Traditional Authority Dambe in Neno.
According to Kaliati, police together with medical personnel went to the scene of the incident and after examining the bodies, they found that the four died due to severe assault. The four also had fractures in the ribs, arms and deep cuts on the heads.
It was not immediately clear if the police have arrested anyone in connection with the killings.
