Malawi Police in Ntcheu say there has been an increase in cases of people selling stolen medicine in the district.
Ntcheu Police public relations officer, Gift Matewere, said they are receiving such reports each month.
According to Matewere, most of the medicines they find being sold in various markets were stolen from government hospitals.
“The number of people illegally selling government hospital medicine is increasing and we are still investigating to find out where exactly they are getting them from,” he said.
Matewere said last week, police in the district arrested some people for being found with drugs such as Panado and Amoxylin.
Matewere has since assured Malawians that they will be investigating the issue to find other culprits.
The police have also asked the general public to report such cases to them as one way of reducing the malpractice.

Zimchokera kulikulu zinthuzi. Kuagwirako pophera wemba. Sikuti angamangidwe amenewo
Theft is main reason for drug shortages in public hospitals. Talk of food shortage, the reason is nothing but theft by public servants. The problems will continue until everybody is dead.

The issue of drug thefts in public hospices is very painful. Knowing well that no breakins are reported in the hospitals. So the thefts are inhouse. My question is why can’t the govt. make an emergency law for the courts give out very severe jail sentences? These crimes are so bad such that the lenient sentences these people get from courts are as good as telling them to continue with their craft. As long as govt continues to handle this problem with kid gloves it will continue to grow. Thieves are thieves and must be dealt with ruthlessly. Theft or damage of state resources is tantamount to treason. These people want govt to fail in its delivery of services. Osapatsa fine. Give them 15 yrs and above. China does not tolerate such people regardless of rank in society. Thats why China is where it is today. They do not shy away from taking tough and difficult decissions.

i think its high time govt. should direct police officers to search every bag or car or anything that is coming out of hospitals. its not good for a time we are in where we do already have scarce resources in hospitals for someone to be lobbying the same little we have and sell it. pliz malawi govt. do something.
