Mphwiyo ‘shooter’ implicates Joyce Banda

Macdonald Kumwembe, one of the accused in the attempted murder of National Budget Director, Paul Mphwiyo, has named former Malawi president Joyce Banda in the case, saying he was working with Peoples Party as a hired mercenary, High Court documents have revealed.

Kumwembe, a retired Malawi Defence Force soldier, has also implicated Oswald Lutepo and Paul Mphwiyo, saying the two gave him about K0.7 million as advance payment to carry out the illegal job.

Kumwembe told the court he was hired together with his co-accused in the Mphwiyo shooting case Pika Manondo to to instigate a pandemonium during the convention of opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

“[The K700,000] was part payment of our work which I was heading to the south to disturb the MCP party which was to ensure that Lovemore Munlo [former Chief Justice] was not elected as MCP president at the convention as he was a threat” Kumwembe told the court when asked of his connection with Pika Manondo.

Kumwembe said they were ordered in Balaka where Joyce Banda was conducting a political rally to to destabilize the MCP convention in Blantyre. It is alleged that Pika pocketed the cash from Paul Mphwiyo and Oswald Lutepo. He however did not mention how much in total they were promised for the job.

 

It is not the first time that the former President has been dragged in illegal activities. Lutepo and Leonard Kalonga who have both been convicted of cashgate related crimes, respectively named Joyce Banda as the main beneficially of the cashgate scandal, saying they were only used as conduit by Peoples Party and the ex-Malawi leader to siphon public funds from treasury.

Mrs. Banda shrugs off the accusations.

It was however the unsuccessful plot on Mr. Mphwiyo that led to the discovery of the cashgate scandal as unscrupulous government and Peoples Party officials stole over K24 billion of public funds. Kumwembe denies the Paul Mphwiyo shotting charges.

The trial continues.
