Police in Malawi’s border district of Mwanza have arrested four people for being found in illegal possession of foreign currency at Mwanza border.
Deputy Public Relations Officer for the Southern Region Headquarters Surgent Widson Nhlane identified the four as 31 year old Agness Tchali, 32 year old Precious Musapha, 35 year old Judith Matope and 39 year old Peter Augustino.
According to Nhlane, Tchali was found with 3650 South African rands, Musamba and Augustino had 3000 rands each while Matope 2680 rands.
“All were going to Sourth Africa and upon being searched they were found with the said currency without documents,” said Nhlane.
Nhlane has so far urged people to have supporting documents whenever they are going out of the country with any amount of foreign currency.
Tchali comes from Mwanju village in the area of Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi district.
Matope hails from Chalata village in Traditional Authority Mpunga in Chiradzulu district, while Augustino is from Chapota village Traditional Authority Changata in Thyolo district and Musampha comes from Makalani village Traditinal Authority Mpama in Chiradzulu district.
The four will soon appear in court to answer charges of illegal possession of foreign currency.
