Three in custody over murder of 3-year-old girl with albinism in Kasungu

Police in Kasungu are keeping in custody three people in connection to the killing a 3-year-old girl with albinism, Talandira Chirwa.

The three are Joyce Nkhoma, 40, Cosmas Divala Ngwira, 46 and  Kennedy Nyirenda, 28.

The three are suspected to have killed Chirwa on November 30, 2022 at Mawawa Village, Traditional Authority Chulu in Kasungu.

Following the incident, police instituted investigations  that led to the arrest of the suspects. Meanwhile, investigations continue to trace the chopped arm.

The three have since been charged with murder contravening section 209 of the Malawi Penal Code and will appear in court soon.

Nkhoma and Ngwira hail from Mawawa Village while Nyirenda hails from Mponde Village in the area of Traditional Authority Chulu in Kasungu.

On November 30 around 23:00hours, Talandira was sleeping on the same bed with her  grandmother since her parents are divorced.  An unidentified man forcibly broke into the house and stabbed the child on the neck and chopped off the arm and went away with it.

The UN has previously warned that People with albinism at risk of extinction in Malawi where they are attacked and murdered in cold blood in Malawi.

A month hardly passes without a case of a person with albinism attacked or murdered.
