The Malawi national Under 20 football team have launched their 2016 confederation of Southern Africa Football Association (COSAFA) with a goalless draw against Zimbabwe in Group B.
A match that took place on Friday saw the Junior Flames failing to convert chances into precious goals.
Coach Gerald Phiri named Christopher Mikuwa, Azriel John, Captain Mike Mkwate, Chimwemwe Idana, Francisco Madinga, Frank Chizuze, Dickson Nyasulu, Precious Sambani, Abel Mwakalima, Hadji Wali, and Kondwani Mwaila as his starting eleven.
Zimbabwe had the better chances in the first half as Christopher Mikuwa man in goals was at his best position to deny Zimbabwe’s shots on goals by their running man Clive Rupiya.
After the break, Malawi were denied a clear penalty after their defender brought down Nyasa Big Bullets winger Mike Mkwate in the danger area but the man in control waved play on.
The second half still brought no goals for each team as it ended in all draw.
At the end of 90 minutes, Malawi’s captain Mike Mkwate was chosen man of the match a development which he said is a boost to him and to the entire team too.
Malawi’s next match will be against Zambia this afternoon. Zimbabwe may face elimination as they were also thumped 5-1 by Zambia in their opening match on Wednesday.
Zimbabwe must now hope that the young Chipolopolo boys of Zambia beat Malawi by four goals or more in Sunday’s encounter in order to have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
South Africa were the first to steal the show on the opening day of the 2016 COSAFA Under-20 championships with their 8-0 Lesotho at Moruleng stadium on Wednesday in Group A.
The Zambia U20 men’s national football team booked a place in the 2016 Cosafa U20 semi-finals after defeating Malawi 3-0 in their Group B match played at the Moruleng Stadium on Sunday.
Man-of-the-Match Chrispin Sakulanda opened the scoring in the 26th minute after breaking from the left wing and combining with Edward Chilufya before curling his effort beyond Christopher Mikuwa in goal for Malawi.
Patson Daka increased Zambia’s advantage in the 76th minute when he tapped home from Kenneth Kalunga’s square pass and Fashion Sakala sealed the points with a low effort at the far post from Sakulanda’s cross with five minutes remaining on the clock.
The result took Zambia to 6 points, five clear of Malawi who will play the winner of Group D while Zambia will play the runner-up from that group on Tuesday in what will be dead rubber matches.
Zambia will play against the winner of Group D in the second semi-final scheduled for Moruleng Stadium at 19h30 on Wednesday.
Coach Beston Chambeshi said it was good to score a lot of goals for the second match running in the competition.
“It was a nice game; Malawi came into the match needing a point but we were too good for them. I thank the boys for scoring three goals. It is nice that we won again today,” Chambeshi said.
And Malawi U20 coach Gerald Phiri said his boys seemed jittery but he was happy with their display.
“We learnt a lot from this match. As you saw my boys were a bit shaky because of the Zambians’ height. Overall, we gave a grand fight although we lost. Am happy with the performance,” he said.
