Driver fined for causing death of 8 year-old boy

The Kasungu first grade magistrate court on Thursday ordered a 48 year-old man to pay K120,000 or in default to serve 15 months in jail for causing death due to reckless driving.

Kasungu police deputy public relations officer Harry Namwaza said the man identified as Daudi Mvula was on 20 September this year driving a Toyota Hilux double cabin registration number BN 9054 from Lilongwe to Mzuzu along M1 road.

crime (2)When he arrived at Kaluluma junction near Nkhamenya Trading Centre, Mvula hit an 8 year-old boy identified as Alick Phiri who was crossing the road from left to right.

After he hit the child, Mvula rushed to Nkhamenya police unit to report the matter and the boy was taken to hospital by another vehicle but was pronounced dead upon arrival.  

Postmortem conducted revealed that the child died due to head injuries.

Police investigations report showed that Mvula was overspeeding and he was also using an expired licence.

In court Mvula, was found guilty and was ordered to pay K120,000, failing which he will be locked out for 15 months.

Daudi Mvula comes from Chipamira village, Traditional Authority Kilipura in Karonga district.
