The Malawi Government through the ministry of information communications technology and civic education has assured journalists in the country of better working conditions.
In a statement signed by the minister of information communications technology and civic education Patricia Kaliati on the commemoration of world press freedom day on 3rd May, government acknowledged the role of journalists in Malawi.
“We believe that the media can only participate meaningfully in supporting development if they are given press freedom. It is for this reason that government supports press freedom and joins the media in the country as we commemorate this important day.
“We believe that the media will celebrate press freedom as a fundamental right that must be exercised with responsibility and professionalism. It is in reflecting where we could have done better that, together, we can make Malawi do better,” reads part of the statement.
The statement further assured that no journalist will be arrested or stopped from professionally doing his or her job during this administration.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day celebrations were held under the theme “Access to Information and Fundamental Freedoms”.

The government is caught between two evils.
Sticking to their assurances invites more exposures of clandestine financial dealings inside the gvr.
At the same time it has to balance this freedom by using part cadets making
hit-lists to frighten investigative reporting of theft and other misdeeds.
Reigning in cadets would mean free for all attacks.
The reverse risks accussation on gagging the press and intimidation.
Let just call the assurance as window dressing. Otherwise ATI in its present form is useless.
