Man jailed for four years for theft

A 23 year-old man in Blantyre has been sentenced to four years imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a sewing machine.

According to Assistant Public Relations Officer for Limbe police station, Widson Nhlane, the convict Langton Muhammad on 14 March this year broke into the house of a certain lady in Soche township and stole a sewing machine worth K20,000.

CourtHe was later caught and the court found him guilty of house breaking which is contrary to section 309 of the penal code and theft which is contrary to section 278 of the penal code.

In mitigation, the convict asked the court to exercise leniency when passing judgment as he was a first offender.

However, a state prosecutor said the offence is serious hence the convict deserves a stiffer to deter others from committing the same offence.

Midima Senior Resident Magistrate then sentenced Muhammad to four years imprisonment with hard labour.

Muhammad hails from Makwale village T/A Kapeni in Blantyre.
