An infant has died while the mother remains missing after a boat carrying four people capsized on the Shire River in Nsanje District.
The accident happened at Dumba Village, under Traditional Authority Tengani, as the group crossed the river to reach their farm in neighbouring Mozambique.
Local resident Greenfold Banda told a local media that the passengers were a woman identified as Berita John, her infant, her husband and the boat operator.
Banda said two of the four occupants were rescued from the water, but the infant later died after being taken to Tengani Hospital for treatment.
John remains missing, with community members continuing the search for her.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established, while Nsanje Police have not yet issued an official statement.
