‘Not every criticism is a plot’ — Chithyola told

A political storm is gathering around Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda—but this time, the question is not simply who is trying to bring him down. It is whether every criticism of his performance should be dismissed as part of a political plot.

Concerned citizen Joshua Mbewe has told Chithyola Banda that not every criticism of his performance should be interpreted as a political plot to remove him from office.

Mbewe says his continued criticism of Chithyola has nothing to do with internal MCP politics or efforts to influence the party’s leadership, but is instead about accountability in the office of Leader of Opposition.

His latest statement follows a response from Chithyola’s camp suggesting that criticism of the opposition leader is being used to create a perception that he is inactive and failing to speak for Malawians.

But Mbewe says the response misses the point of his concern.

“Not every criticism is an attack. Not every rebuke is a conspiracy. Not every question about your performance is an attempt to remove you,” he says.

Mbewe argues that Chithyola, as Leader of Opposition, holds an important national office and should expect citizens to question how he is performing his responsibilities.

He says his concern is particularly about whether the opposition leadership is sufficiently speaking on issues affecting ordinary Malawians, including those facing difficulties amid the country’s challenges.

Mbewe further questions why Chithyola appears, in his view, to have energy to respond to people criticising him while citizens are looking for the opposition to challenge government failures.

“You have time to defend yourself. You have time to respond to those criticizing you. You have time to explain who is allegedly plotting against you and why people supposedly want you removed,” he says.

He argues that the same energy should be directed towards scrutinising government and raising issues affecting citizens.

Mbewe says criticism should not automatically become a political battlefield, arguing that public office holders must be prepared to receive questions about their performance without assuming that every question is part of a wider conspiracy.

“Sometimes someone is simply telling you the truth,” he says.

Mbewe maintains that he is not fighting Chithyola and has no interest in who wants to remove whom within MCP, saying his concern remains what Chithyola is doing and not doing in the office he occupies.

He says the Leader of Opposition should focus on providing checks and balances to government and ensuring that issues affecting ordinary citizens remain part of the national conversation.
