Forget the honeymoon and wedding gifts. Mulanje West MP Patricia Kaliati and her husband had a different mission when they staged a mock wedding.
The couple staged a mock wedding with an unusual goal, raising money to buy sewing machines for women and young people.
The unusual celebration took place at St Joseph Mendulo Parish grounds, where people gathered not just to witness the mock wedding but also to contribute towards the Namulenga Deanery Catholic Women Association’s (CWA) fundraising drive.
The association, which falls under the Archdiocese of Blantyre, wants to buy sewing machines to train women and young people in tailoring, giving them a chance to earn money and become financially independent.

Speaking after the event, Kaliati said she was happy to support the association’s initiative and remained committed to helping women and young people become economically self-reliant.
“I was happy when the Namulenga Deanery CWA approached me to help them raise funds through a mock wedding,” said Kaliati.
She thanked everyone who attended and contributed towards the cause, saying their support would help the association achieve its goal.
The money raised is expected to help the beneficiaries acquire practical tailoring skills that could enable them to generate income, support their families and improve their livelihoods.
