Fields in Rumphi are beginning to tell a different story as maize and tomatoes planted with support from the Dr Jane Ansah Foundation push towards maturity.
Mhuu! What started as support for community livelihoods is now taking shape in the fields, with crops growing and an irrigation system keeping farming activities going.
The foundation’s Director of Operations, Lewis Kamundi, said the project is progressing, with community members continuing to work on the farms.
Recent photographs from the project show rows of maturing maize and tomato crops alongside the irrigation infrastructure being used by the farmers.
The irrigation system is helping the communities water their crops, reducing their reliance on rainfall and allowing agricultural activities to continue.
Community members are now concentrating on caring for the crops and keeping the irrigation system operational as the plants approach harvesting time.
The development follows an earlier donation by the Dr Jane Ansah Foundation to communities in Rumphi to support practical livelihood activities.
The latest progress shows the assistance being put to use, with beneficiaries actively participating in farming rather than leaving the donated resources idle.
The growing crops also offer a visible measure of what the intervention is producing on the ground.
Kamundi has been involved in the foundation’s community interventions as it follows up on projects supported through its programmes.
For the farmers involved, the immediate task is to protect the crops, maintain the irrigation infrastructure and prepare for the expected harvest.
The Rumphi project therefore moves into its next phase, with the success of the intervention now tied to how well the communities maintain the farms through to harvest.
