Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman has called for stronger private sector involvement in addressing Malawi’s socio-economic challenges, saying government cannot single-handedly meet the needs of its citizens.
Suleiman made the remarks during an engagement between Members of Parliament and NICO Group in Lilongwe, where discussions centered on expanding financial access and development partnerships.
He said Parliament is deliberately opening its doors to the private sector to foster collaboration that delivers practical solutions for Malawians.
“We need institutions like NICO to come in with tailor-made programs because government alone cannot satisfy the needs of our people,” said Suleman.
The Speaker highlighted the role of private companies in driving key infrastructure and development projects that directly impact people’s livelihoods.
He pointed to initiatives supported by NICO Group, including investments in financial services and infrastructure, as examples of how private capital can complement public efforts.
Suleman also raised concern over limited access to affordable financing, noting that many Malawians struggle to secure loans due to strict collateral requirements.
“Most people have viable ideas but fail to access loans because they lack security, and this is where institutions must innovate,” he said.
NICO Group Chief Operating Officer Kwanele Ngwenya said the engagement was designed to strengthen ties with lawmakers and promote financial inclusion across constituencies.
“We believe collaboration with government is key to delivering solutions that create jobs, build infrastructure and improve financial security,” said Ngwenya.
