Malawi’s military veterans are set to see improved support for their daily lives and welfare, following a new long-term partnership aimed at strengthening assistance for those who once served the nation.
NBS Bank Plc has signed a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malawi Defence Force to sponsor the MDF Veterans Golf Tournament, an initiative that channels proceeds towards improving veterans’ livelihoods, including housing, basic needs, and general welfare.
Speaking during the signing ceremony on Wednesday, NBS Bank Chief Executive Officer Temwani Simwaka said the partnership reflects the bank’s enduring commitment to recognising the sacrifices made by veterans in securing the country’s peace and stability.

“As a proudly Malawian bank, we recognise that the peace and progress we enjoy today are built on the sacrifices of our veterans. This partnership is about honouring that service and playing our part in supporting their well-being,” said Simwaka.
MDF Commander General George Jaffu said the initiative goes beyond sport, serving as a platform to highlight the realities faced by veterans while mobilising broader support.
“This tournament is more than a sporting event, it is a reminder that service to the nation does not end at retirement and that, as a nation, we have a responsibility to support those who served,” said Jaffu.
He added that the agreement will help strengthen collaboration between the MDF and NBS Bank, ensuring the tournament continues to grow as a meaningful platform for honouring veterans.
Over the years, the MDF Veterans Golf Tournament, also known as the Thanksgiving Golf Tournament, has expanded significantly, attracting participation from corporate institutions, government officials, and golfers nationwide.
Beyond competition, it has become a unifying event promoting patriotism, camaraderie, and collective responsibility towards those who served with distinction.
