There is renewed hope that Mphatso Phiri, an employee at Bigmart store in Mzimba Boma who was injured while on duty, may finally receive compensation and relief following the intervention of a legal firm.
The development follows a report by Malawi24 highlighting Mphatso’s plight, which revealed that she had not received any form of support from his employer after sustaining injuries on February 1, 2025, while offloading goods from the store’s vehicle.
The report caught the attention of Eva and Eva Attorneys, a Mzuzu-based law firm led by Evans Mbotwa, which has pledged to represent Mphatso free of charge.
Speaking to this publication, Mbotwa expressed concern over the case and commended Malawi24 for shedding light on the issue.
“Our role is to help people by representing them in various legal cases. We were very touched by Mphatso’s story, and we commend Malawi24 for bringing it to light,” he said.
The legal firm has already taken initial steps by drafting a demand letter to Mphatso’s employer.
“If the shop owner does not comply, we will take the matter to court,” Mbotwa warned.
The intervention has been welcomed by local organizations, including the Mzimba Youth Organization (MYO). Pastor Moses Nkhana, who leads the group, praised Mbotwa’s efforts.
“We are pleased that Mphatso now has a chance to seek justice. We thank Mbotwa for stepping in and commend him for his willingness to assist those whose rights have been violated,” said Nkhana.
He further encouraged Mbotwa to extend his legal services to others in similar situations.
Meanwhile, Mphatso has expressed joy and relief at the latest developments.
“I am happy that lawyer Mbotwa has decided to assist me in this case. May God bless him and bless the journalists who exposed my story,” he said, hopeful that justice will now prevail.
The case has also sparked broader discussions on labour rights in Malawi, with calls for improved workplace safety and better treatment of injured employees.
