Northern Region Chess Committee held elections over the weekend in Mzuzu to elect new office bearers .
They were free and fair elections whereby all positions were up for grabs and only one position – Treasure General – went unopposed.
During the elections, Fishani Mwagomba was elected as chairperson with 14 votes against 7 for Kelse Mhango while the position of vice chairperson went to Vincent Luhanga.
Speaking after the elections, Chess Association of Malawi Treasure General Vitumbiko Ndovi expressed hope that the new committee will promote the sport in the region.
“It is our hope that the new committee will take chess to another level especially here in the North, let me also congratulate all elected members and for all who lost, there is always next time,” said Ndovi.
In his acceptance speech, Mwagomba said he is happy to be elected and asked all those who lost and won to work together as one family.
“I am sure we are going to work hand in hand with both elected members and who didn’t make it today, we are one family with one goal which is to take the sport to all districts in the North. On top of that, we want to organise district leagues apart from having regional league,” he said.
Mwagomba added that there is talent in the region which need to be identified.
