Expert dismisses fears of Malawi carnivorous butterfly

In Malawi this could be the first time to have carnivorous butterfly hence fears that the insect kills humans but an entomologist has dismissed the fears arguing the butterfly is a predator of other insects.

Entomologist Tonny Harris Maulana has dismissed fears that the carnivorous butterflies that are reported to be in the country kill people when consumed.

Carnivorous butterfly,not dangerous to humans(lepscience).

Reports stormed social media that the butterfly with monkey like face is dangerous to human life.

This raised fears among people with others shunning to buy vegetables for fear of consuming the butterfly, while others nicknamed it as “satanic pest”.

But Maulana has dismissed the fears arguing the pests eat other insects and are not dangerous to people.

“It is a predator of other pests like aphids, in America it was identified as only carnivorous butterfly, the larvae of this butterfly eats other insects,” said Maulana.

Carnivorous butterfly is under the group of Feniseca tarquinius. It was reported to be found in North America and other European countries.

  7. This has been very badly misunderstood hahaha! There are quite a few butterflies in Malawi, as well as world wide, that partially or fully feed on ants or aphids – but nothing else. Not even any other types of insects, nor any other animal. Only aphids and ants. And there are no such species that are only found in Malawi. Very similar species to the few endemic ones are found throughout Africa, and none have been found to be dangerous in any way. They are also all quite small – no bigger than maize kernel, and are solitary in nature, so they won’t be able to eat you alone, and they do not like working in large packs to catch animals bigger than themselves (like ants).
