Opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) lawmaker for Salima north east constituency Jessie Kabwila has faulted the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) for what she dubs as ‘politicizing’ the 53 Independence celebrations through the the cloth that citizens are to put on 6th July.

Kabwila argues the cloth, takes the celebration more of a party celebration.

The cloth has President Peter Mutharika’s face  with its colour in blue – which apperently happens to be DPP’s colour something which Kabwila says portrays the celebrations as being of the party and not the nation.

Independence day celebration cloth sparkles reactions.

“It has a leader of DPP and the colour of DPP, it does not carry 6 July as a day for the nation it makes 6 July a partisan function”

“There are a lot features that they could have put on the cloth for unity sake, talking of national stadium, bridges, some of the things that Malawi has achieved since independence” said Kabwila in interview with Malawi24.

She further urged the ruling DPP to stop politicizing national events saying Malawians need unity on nation issues by not being partisan.

“If MCP is invited, MCP is not blue, AFORD is not blue, PP (Peoples Party) is not blue just like any other party that can be invited at that function, we need to unite as a country, since multi party we have been waiting for a such leader who can stop politicizing national events” added Kabwila.

Malawi celebrates  53 years of self rule after the British government had handed over ruling powers to black citizens of the country.

Prayers are to be conducted in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe and a football match between Silver Strikers and Nyasa Big Bullets is among main activities to spice up the celebration.

The 53 Malawi independence celebration is to be celebrated under the theme “Thanking God for the season of plenty”
