Police in Mzuzu have arrested seven Malawians for stealing items belonging to the Millennium Challenge Account – Malawi worth 22 million Kwacha.
According to police files, the seven thieves were arrested late last week.
A month ago, the Millennium Challenge Account- Malawi chapter reported to Mzuzu police of the theft of items worth millions at their offices.
It is said that the stolen items were to be used for enhancing electricity provision in the country.
Later police launched an investigation on the matter which has seen the seven in custody.
Information from the police has indicated that those arrested include five workers at a Chinese Company, Chint Electric Company, at Luwinga substation in Mzuzu.
Further information indicates that Chint Electric Company is contracted by Millennium Challenge Account.
Amongst the suspects are two hardware equipment dealers who are yet to be identified.
They have been arrested for buying the stolen equipment.
The seven will soon appear before court to answer charges of theft.
