The African Development Bank (AfDB) has given Malawi K12 billion Kwacha to help avert the hunger situation in the country.

The donation comes at a time when nearly half of the population is food insecure following low crop yields caused by El-Nino effects in the last farming season.

Speaking during the official signing of the grant, AfDB country representative Andrew Mwawa said the bank looks forward to prudent management of the grant.

Mwawa added that the bank has since set measures to ensure the money is spent for its intended purpose.

While applauding the gesture by the AfDB, minister of finance Goodall Gondwe said government is to use the money for humanitarian aid to the victims of hunger in the country.

Malawi is expected to buy over 30 thousand metric tons of maize with the AfDB grant to support the needy in the hunger crisis. The donation to the country comes after another one of K700 000 million was made early this year by the bank.
