The Blantyre Magistrate has sentenced a man to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for raping a five year-old girl.

The convict, Anthony Joliji aged 50, was arrested for forcing himself on the child in Blantyre city.

CourtState prosecutor sub Inspector Dingi Mbepula from Chileka police told the court that Joliji deserved a tough punishment following the high number of cases of defilement being reported in the country.

During mitigation, the convict pleaded for lenient punishment arguing that he fell into the devil’s circle hence his decision to sexually molest the child.

However, magistrate Kondanani Chinangwa shot down the convict’s plea arguing that the numerous cases of defilement gives Malawians a bad image. He then handed the rapist a 12-year jail term.

Joliji hails from Imbwa village, Traditional Authority (T.A) Kunthembwe in Blantyre city.
