A 49 year-old businessman in Nkhotakota was on Saturday night murdered at his home in the district, Police say.

The businessman, Isaac Banda, who was popularly known as ‘Charo ncha yehova’ also worked as an accountant at Salima District Education office.

According to Nkhotakota Police Public Relations Officpoliceer Sub Inspector Williams Kaponda, two unknown people went to Banda’s house during the night and they found his son together with a friend preparing supper but at that time the businessman was not home.

“The gunmen introduced themselves as soldiers from Salima and one of them accused the deceased of being in love with his wife hence they had come to solve the issue amicably,” said Kaponda.

Later, Banda arrived at the house from Kalimanjira Trading Centre where he went to visit his maize mill.

When they saw Banda, the thugs forced the deceased’s son and his friend into a bedroom and tied them with a rope after threatening the two with a small gun.

“The thugs then dragged Banda into his bedroom where he was making unusual noise,” said Kaponda.

At that moment, Banda’s son shouted for assistance and when people came they found the deceased lying dead on the bed with both hands tied and face covered with a green bathing towel whilst the neck was tied with wire. By that time the thugs had already run away.

The deceased’s body was then taken to Nkhotakota District Hospital where postmortem revealed that the he died due to strangulation. Isaac Banda hailed from Malasa village, Traditional Authority Malengachanzi in Nkhotakota.

Police in the district have since launched investigations to arrest the thugs.
