Government has faulted the University of Malawi (UNIMA) council and the Committee of Education in Parliament for fanning the Chancellor College student demonstrations.

Government’s spokesperson Patricia Kaliati said the two entities were in a better position to deal with the fee hike issue before the students decided to hold vigils that culminated into running battles with the police.

“I fault the University Council and the Committee of Education in Parliament because they were supposed to be the ones to look into it and deal with it,” said Kaliati.

She also claimed that government has information to the effect that some politicians were behind the demonstrations. The government spokesperson said it is unfortunate that some politicians chose to destroy the future of the students.

“It is unfortunate that some well-educated politicians were behind it and we are aware that they went to South Africa to collect money,” said the minister.

According to Kaliati, the students do not know what they are doing because if they knew they would have found ways of dealing with the issue rather than protesting.

She further said that the Chancellor College Students Union should have talked to the Minister of Education to map the way forward on the issue rather than destroying the future of other students.

Kaliati has since said government leaves everything in the hands of God hoping that He can intervene in the situation.

“What more can we say, we only hope comes in and speaks to these people to stop their actions” said the government spokesperson.
