Students from University of Malawi (UNIMA) have disclosed that they will hold demonstrations against hiking of mature entry fees.

The students have argued that the hike will see most mature students withdrawing from their studies on financial grounds.

University of Malawi Students Union (UMSU) President Tionge Daston Sikwese said that they are to present a petition in two weeks to the ministry of education so that the University Council can reverse the decision.

Earlier, education commentator Benedicto Kondowe blasted the University Council for the hike saying the increase came at a time when Malawians are facing enormous challenges.

Kondowe added that the hike is too high for students to pay in public universities and it will be a hindrance to accessing high education in Malawi.

The new fees regime will see mature entry students paying K900,000 at Chancellor College, K950,000 at The Polytechnic, K1 million at Kamuzu College of Nursing and K1.4 million at College of Medicine.
