Gwanda Chakuamba not dead.

The social media was last night awashed with reports that veteran politician Gwanda Chakuamba had died, but Malawi24 can confirm that it was merely one of the fast trending hoaxes on the social media.

The posts which were all over news pages claimed that the family members to Chakuamba had confirmed of the death got shared by thousands of Malawians making the false news spread like fire.

This was highly believed by people on social media platforms and instant messaging applications because it is known that he (Chakuamba) is in India for treatment.

But Minister of Foreign affairs Francis Kasaila who also hails from Nsanje where Chakuamba enjoys massive support says that while it is true that Chakuamba is in India, it was false that he has died.

He says that the 81 year old is at the moment getting treated at a hospital in India just as any other outpatient.

In September last year he had traveled to South Africa where he was nursing apparent heart complications.

Since his jovial and vocal political career dating way to the middle 1980s , Chakuamba has been a bonafide and controversial member of ‘big’ political parties like the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) , United Democratic Front (UDF) Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and was recently affiliated to former governing Peoples Party (PP) prior to the May 20 Tripartite elections.
