The Parliamentary Committee on Transport has appealed to the Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services to ban small minibuses particularly Vanettes and bongos.
Speaking after touring the road traffic office in Lilongwe, the committee argued that the minibuses are not in standard to provide public transport services in the country.
The Chairperson of the committee Victor Mbewe said these minibuses are prone to kill more people once they are involved in accidents.
“The laws are there, they are just to be enforced small minibuses are not supposed to be operating as commuters in the country,” said Mbewe.
For several times, Malawi government has been removing taxes on importation of buses saying it is a recipe for disaster especially to minibus business.
After replacements of duty on the big buses, many private businesses operators opted to import small buses that that have little space for passengers.

Idont see any reason for the ban,Malawians dont respect the laws.No wonder Bongoz penentrates through check points with 25passengers on board! and for bigger minbuses the number may reach 30 from these figures subtract two passenger fee in each case, and thus the penentrating fee at acheck point.Who gets the fee am talking about? You wil find that its somebody in the name of alaw inforcer!this problem orignates from our parliament,coz it is full of qualified but not compitent occupants only afew can manage this but the rest wil say nooooh!
Overloading charge is very small (k5,000) dats y these drivaz dnt abide by de law coz if u priotise u wl find that evn if u pay an overloading fine u stil make more money than u wld make wthout overloading. So if the goverment can raise up the fine may be to k25,000 these pple wl abide by the law
