Workers lock Neno council offices over unpaid salaries

Neno district council workers this morning shut down the district’s council offices in protest over unpaid salaries.

StrikeIn an interview, Neno district commissioner (DC) Memory Monteilo admitted that the council has been failing to pay its workers since January.

According to Monteilo, she learnt of the development this morning as she got surprised that the car that was supposed take her to the office did not come. She was later told that the offices had been shut down.

The DC said discussion with the workers are underway to map the way forward on the matter.

Monteilo added that she will try all means to deal with the matter accordingly to make sure that the workers get back to work and that they receive their salaries.

In a related development, workers of a company constructing the Nsanje youth centre stadium have converged at Nsanje district council offices to demand payment for the project.

The workers said they learnt that their boss is failing to give them their money because the district council has not yet paid the contractor.

The construction workers have since threatened to continue protesting until they are given their money.
